Formula D Streets of Long Beach- Let the Journey Begin

Formula D Long Beach was an exciting weekend full of tire slaying, drivers being pushed to their limits and on my end… a lot going on other than shooting.

The start of April was quite the run around for me because I had just flown in from Texas to start my new job at Bulletproof Automotive- all while looking for a place to live in Long Beach. Luckily I wasn’t hotel living too long and literally picked up the keys to my apartment the day before the main festivities began. I’ll be honest, I was nervous as hell moving out to a place much bigger than a small hometown girl could expect, but overall the timing of this move hit dead on with such a rip-roaring season kicking off.

The first morning I woke up in my apartment to the sound of screaming engines and howling tires sliding around the track. A massive pro to living in Long Beach during the month of April, especially with the Grand Prix taking place the following week-a sound I will never forget.

That sort of atmosphere was just the beginning. I arrive to the street circuit and it was like a whole new world, I had been to FD before in Texas, but our courses are nothing like this. As I’m walking over to the grid pro drivers are passing by in their incredible builds, the sound of their engines revving puts the biggest smile on my face.

I finally make my way to the starting line and am awe struck at what I see, high rises and palm trees lined up along the walls which you would typically expect in SoCal, but this type of scenic view at a track? I’m just mesmerized.

I look up and imagine being on a condo’s balcony overlooking the track below watching the cars take each corner sideways then as you wait for the next one to go you daze into the ocean view. Talk about Cali dreaming… Okay, back to reality.

The drivers are lined up and anxious to tear up some rubber, clouds of smoke fill the air from endless burnouts and donuts.

Qualifying begins and I make my way over to the course to be up close and personal with the action.

Before my eyes clipping points are hit, body panels fly, wheels shatter and gut churning crashes take place.

There were some aggressive runs as the drivers gave it their all racing for the title; crowds of fans filling the grandstands and cheering them on.

It was a close run towards the end, Forsberg made his way to the top of the podium followed by Moen and Essa. At the end of the day, it was an experience that I will always remember and the perfect way to begin my own journey.
